Pit Bull Mixes Attack Again in Stroudsburg PA

On Aug. 24, 2010, 2 pit bull mixes, with a history of past vicious propensities, were shot by police and euthanized.  As described in The Pocono Record, the 2 dogs had been running loose, killed other animals and charged at a police officer during the past few days.  The pit bulls had run onto another property leaving the residents afraid to leave their home.  When a police officer responded, the dogs charged at him.  One dog bit the officer's foot as they forced him to flee onto the hood of the police car.  The use of a Taser had no affect on the dogs.  The dogs were eventually shot by Stroud Area Regional Police.

Monroe County Pit Bull Attack Injures 3 Men

On August 19, 2010 a pit bull got loose in Coolbaugh Township, Monroe County PA and attacked 3 men and killed another dog.  As described in the Pocono Record, the pit bull bit 2 men on their legs and wounded their German Shepherd.  Another man was bitten on the left hand and right calf while trying to protect his Yorkshire Terrier which was killed by the pit bull.  The pit bull owner from Pocono Summit will be charged with violations of the PA Dog Law.

Allegheny County Pit Bull Attack Victim Recovering

On August 4, 2010, an Allegheny County dog bite victim was attacked by a neighbor's pit bull in Port Vue PA.  Channel 4 reported that the 5 year-old girl was dragged by the pit bull and then it bit her on her head.  Her father pulled the pit bull off his daughter.  The pit bull was not vaccinated and rabies shots were given to both the dog bite victim and her father.  Citations for violations of the PA Dog Law are expected.

PA Dog Bite Victim Severely Injured by Mastiff

On July 31, 2010 a Pennsylvania dog bite victim was seriously injured after she was attacked by a mastiff.  As described on CBS3.com, a 41 year-old woman was being attacked by the mastiff when police arrived in the Point Breeze section of Philadelphia.  An officer shot the dog to stop the attack.  The victim was admitted into the hospital at the University of Pennsylvania for treatment of head and neck wounds which required surgery.

A July 25, 2010 press release from dogsbite.org identifies pit bulls as the cause of 12 of the 18 fatal dog bite attacks in the United States so far this year.  10 of the 12 victims were killed by pit bulls who were family pets.  Rottweilers killed 3 family members in 2010 dog bite attacks.  These grim statistics destroy the myth that pit bulls only attack strangers and do not harm "family".

Another Pit Bull Shot & Killed By Carlisle Police

On July 8, 2010, Carlisle police officers were forced to shoot a pit bull that was running loose and acting aggressively toward the officers.  According to wgal.com, the Cumberland County pit bull owner was cited for violating the PA dog Law for failing to confine the pit bull.  The article further noted that it was the second time in 4 months that the Carlisle police shot and  killed a pit bull.

Bulldog & Mastiff Attack Blair County Dog Bite Victim

On June 29, 2010, a 70 year-old woman was walking her terrier in Roaring Spring PA when an American Bulldog and a Cane Corso Mastiff jumped a 4 foot fence.  They knocked down the Blair County dog bite victim numerous times and bit her arms and legs.  The dogs killed the terrier.  According to wjactv.com, the owner of the bulldog and mastiff will be charged with multiple violations of the PA Dog Law, including failure to confine.

Another Child Mauled By a Pit Bull 

On June 22, 2010, a 2 year-old Mifflin County dog bite attack victim was seriously injured by a pit bull.  According to The Lewistown Sentinel, the little girl sustained a serious head injury due to the pit bull attack.  She was flown from Lewistown Hospital to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA.  In order to rescue the girl, the Lewistown Police shot and killed the pit bull.

Lehigh Valley Pit Bull Owner Faces Dog Law Charges

A June 14, 2010 article from the Morning Call described misdemeanor charges filed against a Lehigh Valley pit bull owner.  An Upper Saucon Township woman let her 2 pit bulls run free in the neighborhood.  The dogs allegedly went after a neighbor, a census taker and another neighbor before the pit bulls were chased away.  Violations of the PA Dog Law regarding failure to confine or secure the pit bulls were charged.  The dog owner was issued citations in May for also allegedly failing to confine the pit bulls.

Medical Fund For York County Dog Bite Victim

Philly Pit Bull Attacks Woman & Good Samaritan

On June 2, 2010 a pit bull was running loose in south Philadelphia when it attacked a 32 year old woman.  According to 6abc news, the dog bite victim sustained injuries to her arms and legs.  A 56 year old man came to her defense.  The pit bull turned on him and bit off a portion of his right ear.  Both PA dog bite victims were transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

York County Pit Bull Attack Seriously Injures Boy

On June 1, 2010, an 8 year-old boy and his mother were viciously attacked by 2 pit bulls in Hanover Borough Pennsylvania.  As described on wgal.com, the young boy was playing in a yard when the 2 pit bulls jumped a fence and mauled the victim.  His mother and neighbors rushed to stop the attack.  The dog bite victim suffered severe injuries to the head and his ears.  Hanover Police Officers shot and killed one of the pit bulls to stop the attack.

Monroe County PA Public Dog Park

A May 24, 2010 article in The Pocono Record detailed a plan to erect a public dog park at River's Edge Park on River Road.  In order for the dog park to be completed by the end of 2010, Middle Smithfield Township as well as Smithfield Twp. need to obtain the funds necessary to purchase fencing, gates and crushed stones.  The Monroe County dog park would allow the Poconos residents to let their dogs run free within closed sections of the park.

Montgomery County Pit Bull Shot by Police

On May 14, 2010, a Montgomery County PA pit bull was shot and killed by West Pottsgrove Police after it killed a domestic cat and dog.  According to the Pottstown Mercury, the first unprovoked attack took place when the pit bull mauled a cat.  It continued to run loose in West Pottsgrove and then killed a small dog.  Police then shot the pit bull twice and also shot at it with a Taser Gun.

Pit Bull Kills Chihuahua
in Bethlehem PA

On May 3, 2010, a pit bull jumped a fence on Muschlitz Street in Bethlehem and killed a chihuahua that was being walked by its owner on a leash.  The Morning Call reported that the pit bull owner is being charged with violations of the PA Dog Law, including failing to contain his dog and not having a license.

Earlier that day, another pit bull in Bethlehem viciously attacked a poodle.  The poodle's owner incurred $2,000.00 in veterinary expenses due to its injuries.

Kunkletown Dog Bite Victim Sustains Facial Wounds

On April 18, 2010, a 2 year-old girl from Kunkletown PA was attacked by a mixed breed dog.  She sustained multiple lacerations to her face.  The Monroe County PA dog bite attack victim underwent emergency surgery at Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg PA.  Approximately 40 stitches were needed to close the most significant lacerations.  6 injections were administered to her face to both anesthetize the area and to prevent infection.  Scar revision surgery and/or dermabrasion surgery are possible future options for the facial scars.

German Shepherd Carbon County Dog Bite Attack

On April 8, 2010, a teenager was walking her dog in a Carbon County private development when she was attacked by a neighbor's German Shepherd.  The Carbon County PA dog bite victim was treated at Lehighton Hospital for wounds to her hand & wrist.  Since it was unclear as to whether the German Shepherd was up to date on its shots, the young woman was given a series of injections to prevent rabies.

Pit Bull Shot By PA State Police

On April 4, 2010, a Pennsylvania State Police trooper was investigating a fatal shooting earlier in the week in Armstrong County.  While interviewing some eyewitnesses, the officer was charged at by a neighbor's male pit bull.  The officer shot and killed the pit bull in an act of self-defense.  The Templeton PA dog owner claimed that the pit bull wore an electronic collar that prevented him from actually reaching the State Trooper.

On March 31, 2010, a dog bite victim was bitten on the forearm and abdomen by a pit bull and had to jump onto the roof of a car to escape from the dog.  As described in The Sentinel, a 19 year old Cumberland County man knocked on the door of a North Pitt Street home in Carlisle PA.  The owner's pit bull charged through the door and attacked the young man.  The pit bull owner was cited for 2 violations of the PA Dog Law:  harboring a dangerous dog and failure to restrain a dog.

On March 10, 2010 an Arnold PA resident was attacked by 2 pit bulls when he was walking along Third Avenue.  The Valley News Dispatch reported that the PA dog bite victim was bitten on the legs and left arm.  Ambulance personnel took the Westmoreland County resident to Allegheny Valley Hospital for medical treatment.  The pit bulls' owner was ordered to quarantine the dogs for 10 days.

On March 08, 2010 Altoona PA police officers went to a Willow Avenue home to investigate an Altoona dog bite complaint.  According to WRTA.com, when the police attempted to question the pit bull owner, he ordered his dog to attack.  The pit bull charged at an officer and tried to bite him.  The police officers kicked the dog in the face and and were able to prevent any serious injuries from occurring.  The Altoona pit bull owner was charged with multiple crimes.

On February 28, 2010, 3 pit bulls attacked a neighbor's dog in Schuylkill County PA.  The neighbor was forced to use his foot to push one of the pit bulls off his dog.  According to the Republican Herald, the Schuylkill County dog owner has been cited for harboring a dangerous dog and for violating the requirement of Section 305 of the Pennsylvania Dog Law to keep his pit bulls under control.  The most aggressive pit bull has been euthanized.

A 10 year old boy from Philadelphia nearly lost his arm after a Feb. 21, 2010 pit bull attack. The boy and his friend were walking the friend's 2 pit bulls. According to a story in the Philadelphia Daily News, 1 pit bull's leash broke and the dog ran away. The victim gave chase and then the pit bulls began to fight each other. Suddenly, the dogs turned on the boy and nearly tore off his right arm.

The Philadelphia dog bite victim was taken by ambulance to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children. Two surgeries were needed to save the badly damaged arm. The Pennsylvania SPCA quarantined the male pit bull and are searching for the female pit bull which fled the scene of the dog bite attack.

Philadelphia Woman Killed
in Pit Bull Attack

On Feb. 20, 2010, a 37 year old woman was arguing with her mother in Philadelphia when one of her mom's 6 pit bulls attacked her.  The pit bull bit the woman's neck and would not let go despite the owner's frantic attempts to pull the dog off her daughter.  The Philadelphia dog bite victim was still being attacked when medical personnel arrived at the scene.

The pit bull continued to maul the woman until a Philadelphia police officer shot it to death.  After the shooting, another pit bull charged the officer and he was required to kill that dog as well.  The Philadelphia dog bite attack victim was declared dead in her mother's home by the Philadelphia County coroner's office.  The other 4 pit bulls in the home were removed by the SPCA's Animal Care and Control Team and were placed in quarantine.

On February 19, 2010, a Philadelphia dog bite victim was attacked and seriously injured.  Philly.com reported that a 52 yr. old woman was mauled inside her home by a pit bull that was owned by another resident of the house.  Her left wrist was nearly severed in the dog attack.  She was admitted to Albert Einstein Medical Center in serious condition.  The SPCA's Animal Care and Control Team took custody of the pit bull.

York PA Pit Bull Attack
Victim Hospitalized 4 Days

On January 22, 2010, the Pennsylvania Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement charged a York PA woman with 13 violations of the PA Dog Law.  According to an article on ydr.com, a 14 year old boy was walking home from playing basketball when he was attacked by a pit bull that was running loose in his neighborhood.  The York dog bite attack victim was an inpatient at York Hospital for 4 days for treatment to his arms, head, abdomen and knee.

State Dog Warden Cathy McKinney conducted an investigation which resulted in the identification of the owner of the pit bull and the subsequent charges.  A hearing regarding the alleged PA Dog Law violations will be held before District Justice Barbara H. Nixon.

Norristown Pedestrian Shoots

On January 17, 2010 a German Shepherd mix was running loose on the Schuylkill River Trail in Norristown, PA when the dog allegedly growled and acted aggressively toward a pedestrian. The pedestrian pulled out a handgun and shot at the Shepherd mix.

According to an article in the Times Herald, Norristown police investigated and charged the dog owner with a PA Dog Law violation of failing to control his dog. The officer concluded that since the pedestrian reasonably believed that his safety was hreatened, it was legal for him to shoot at the dog.

Pit Bull Attack

A Perry County PA woman was charged with a violation of the Pennsylvania Dog Law after a December 16, 2009 pit bull attack.  According to an article on cumberlink.com, a gentleman from Liverpool in Perry County was attacked and bitten on the leg by a large pit bull.  The PA dog bite victim was a pedestrian in Millerstown PA.  The owner was charged with failing to properly confine the pit bull.

Montgomery County PA Dog Bite Attack Causes Severe Injuries

On Nov. 24, 2009, the defendant in the case of Commonwealth of Pennsylvania v. McKeoun waived his Preliminary Hearing after a vicious Pennsylvania dog bite attack. A 11/25/09 article in the Pottstown Mercury described how the defendant was charged with a number of crimes following the mauling of a 5 year-old child. The young girl was taken to a farm stand in Plymouth Township by her mother in order to buy pumpkins.

A German Shepherd was unrestrained and not under the control of its owner when it attacked the young girl's throat. She suffered severely damaged vocal cords and a punctured larynx. The Montgomery County PA dog bite victim was taken by Medevac to a Philadelphia hospital where a tracheotomy was performed. She was placed on a ventilator after her surgery and was hospitalized for over 3 weeks.

There were 3 other documented incidents of prior vicious propensities - all of which resulted in injuries to teenagers. The dog owner had been previously ordered by the Montgomery County PA health department to have his German Shepherd restrained in a secured enclosure or leashed and muzzled under the control of someone 18 years or older while in areas open to the public. Once it was established that the dog did not have rabies, the authorities euthanized the dangerous dog.

Erie County PA Pit Bull Attack

A September 16, 2009 dog bite attack in Erie County PA by a pit bull mix has resulted in a number of charges brought against a Western Pennsylvania man. According to a September 19, 2009 article from the Erie Times-News, a 3 yr. old girl was severely injured by a pit bull mix. The dog was previously designated a 'dangerous dog' due to a prior dog bite attack that resulted in a 30 day hospitalization for another young girl.

The latest Pennsylvania dog bite victim sustained a fractured skull, broken facial bones, permanent nerve damage and, lacerations which required over 300 stitches to close. The dog owner was cited for failing to abide by the PA Dog Law's requirements for owning a dangerous dog, as well as a number of criminal charges.

Rottweiler Mix Attacks & Kills Girl in Beaver County PA

No criminal charges were filed after an 8 yr. old girl from Beaver County, PA was killed in a dog bite attack in January of 2009.  The child was mauled to death by a rottweiler mix which had been chained to a camper.  According to an article from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, the Pennsylvania State Police investigated the tragedy and concluded that the dog owner had the rottweiler mix properly restrained on his property.

Allegedly, the dog attack victim had been warned to stay away from the canine.  Since there was no apparent violation of the Pennsylvania Dog Law, there was no basis to charge the dog owner with a crime.  The Beaver County coroner ruled the death accidental.  According to KC Dog Blog, there were 33 dog bite related fatalities in the United States in 2009, 9 of which were attributable to chained dogs.
