Indiana County Driver Pleads Guilty After Fatal Car-Bicycle Accident

On May 4, 2012, an Indiana County PA driver plead guilty to a first degree misdemeanor hit and run accident charge. As described on indianagazette.com, a bicyclist was hit by at least 2 motor vehicles on Route 119 during the early morning hours of July 15, 2005.

The Indiana County bicycle accident victim was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. A year later, the defendant was charged with driving a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in an injury or death to a person. Pressure on Wilmington DE to End Pit Bull Restrictions

A May 3, 2012 article from delmarvanow.com discussed a plan by the Mayor of Wilmington to eliminate current restrictions on pit bulls. Their owners must register the pit bull, have it pass a temperament test, keep it on a leash and muzzled while outside. Spaying/neutering is also required.

Pit bull owners complain about the “red tape” while others decry breed specific regulations. The Kent County SPCA Executive Director spoke against the current law: “It just penalizes people whether they’re good owners or bad owners.” Of course, the forgotten voices are those of the pit bull attack victims. An April 29, 2012 article on lehighvalleylive.com discusses a new approach to reducing stray animals, including dogs in the Lehigh Valley. Palmer Township will spend $400.00 on a hand-held scanner that can read microchips implanted under a pet’s skin. The City of Easton spends around $43,000.00 per year to pay for an animal control officer and fees to shelters to take in stray animals.

While installing microchips in pets is voluntary, the Northampton County municipality is hoping many animal owners spend the $62.60 fee to have the chips installed. A lost dog with an imbedded chip can be identified with the scanner and returned to its owner. Some animal shelters charge 3x as much to house a pit bull as compared to other dogs. Pit Bulls Attack in Philadelphia

On April 25, 2012, two pit bulls that were running loose in Philadelphia attacked a dog owned by an off-duty Philadelphia police officer. As described on abclocal.go.com, 2 brown colored pit bulls came into a park out of nowhere and attacked the innocent dog.

A bystander flagged down an on-duty cop to deal with the Philadelphia pit bull attack. The pitbulls charged the officer. He shot 1 of the pit bulls 3 times before it finally went down. The other pit bull escaped. They have identified the owner of the pit bulls. PA Dog Law charges are expected.

York County Dog Attack Victim Testifies at Trial

Montco Man Attacked by 2 Pit Bulls

An April 22, 2012 article from montgomerynews.com reported on a recent pit bull attack in Whitpain Township. A 68 year-old man was jogging on Muhlenburg Drive on April 10th when he was attacked and bitten by 2 pit bull terriers.

Horsham Township Passes Strict Dog Ordinance

An April 17, 2012 article on horsham.patch.com reviewed a new dog ordinance passed by a Montgomery County PA Township Council to control problem dogs. Horsham Township passed a law that prohibits dogs from barking excessively and/or roaming unrestrained throughout Horsham Township neighborhoods.

Fines range from $100 to $500. This Montgomery County Township hopes its ordinance will serve as a supplement to the PA Dog Law to help reduce the many complaints they are receiving from their residents about dogs in the community. PA Turnpike Fatal Car Accident

On April 16, 2012, a Berks County PA car accident victim died due to injuries sustained in a car crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike 2 days earlier. According to The Pocono Record, the woman was driving on the PA Turnpike when a truck crashed into a traffic control sign, knocking the sign into the incoming travel lanes.

The PA car crash victim was struck in the head by the sign. Her automobile hit another vehicle and then struck a concrete barrier. She was medevaced to Reading Hospital. The Berks County Deputy Coroner pronounced her dead two days later.
