On March 17, 2010, a 13 year-old Easton PA bicyclist was struck and killed by a LANTA bus while riding on Northampton Street. According to The Morning Call, the bicycle rider rode out from an alley between 8th and 9th Streets right into the path of the bus. The Northampton County Coroner declared the bicyclist dead at the scene of the accident. The death was ruled an accident.
The BMX bike the Easton resident was riding was purchased just an hour before the bus-bike collision. Eyewitnesses report that the bicyclist was not wearing a helmet when he was hit by the bus and may have had trouble applying the brakes. Easton Police later determined that the bike’s brakes were in working order at the time of the crash. The police also concluded that the LANTA bus driver was traveling well below the speed limit when the bicycle cut in front of him.
