On April 9, 2014, PennDOT provided a Press Release which noted 1,208 recorded PA accident related deaths in 2013. This is the lowest number since statistics began being compiled in 1928. Deaths involving drivers age 75 and over increased to 142. Some safety experts are concerned that certain senior citizen drivers may be driving while it is unsafe for them to do so. Experts note that older drivers may have failing eyesight and/or hearing. 425 occupants died in fatal car crashes after disregarding PA’s mandatory seat belt law.
