On May 7, 2012, the Schenectady City Council discussed a proposed bill that would require owners of all dogs 20 pounds and over to obtain liability insurance either as a homeowner or renter. The city solicitor noted that there have been several pit bull attacks in the town lately.
The pit bull owners did not have any insurance coverage and, therefore, the dog bite victims had no source of insurance money to compensate them for their pain and suffering, as well as medical bills. The proposed law covers all dogs, 20 lbs. and heavier, regardless of breed.
