On Jan. 15, 2012, a Monroe County pedestrian died after crossing Rt. 33 just south of Interstate 80 in Hamilton Township.  As described in, Pennsylvania State Police originally thought the Poconos resident had been hit by a car while running across Route 33.

However, emergency personnel found him facedown and submerged in a drainage ditch between Rt. 33 and Shafer Road.  An autopsy was conducted at Lehigh Valley Hospital which determined that the pedestrian had drowned.  Toxicology test results are pending.
